Sandra S. Block, O.D., M. Ed., M.P.H., F.A.A.O., FCOVD, is a Professor of Optometry at Illinois College of Optometry, Medical Director, School-Based Vision Clinics, Global Clinical Advisor, and consultant to the Special Olympics Lions Clubs International Opening Eyes program. Dr. Block received her O.D. degree (1981) and Pediatric Residency (1982) at the Illinois College of Optometry where she is a faculty member. She completed her Master’s of Education at National Louis University and her Master’s in Public Health from the University of Illinois, School of Public Health.
She has been a consultant to the Special Olympics Lions Clubs International Opening Eyes program since 1995 and has been instrumental in developing the vision program globally. Dr. Block serves as the Medical Director for the Illinois Eye Institute school-based vision clinic serving Chicago Public Schools. Her interests lie in primary care for children and persons with disabilities, as well as diagnosis and treatment of visually related learning problems.
Dr. Block has authored numerous publications and conducted presentations worldwide. She is a fellow and Diplomate in Public Health and Environmental Optometry at the American Academy of Optometry, as well as achieving a Fellow in College of Optometrists in Visual Development. She was appointed to chair the Public Health Committee of the World Council of Optometry.
