Dr. Enowntai Nkongoh Ayukotang, AFCO Regional Representative

Dr. Ayukotang is a Cameroonian Doctor of Optometry (OD) trained in Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi-Ghana. He is a Commonwealth Scholar that studied MSc in Public Health for Eye Care (MPHEC), at London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), London UK; the programme that trains leaders in Eye Health globally. He is currently a PhD student in Optometry by Research, with the Epi-K Research Team at University of KwaZulu Natal (UKZN), Durban South Africa, and his study is focused on Keratoconus Profiling in Cameroon. In 2020, Dr. Ayukotang was admitted as a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and was the first optometrist from Cameroon to attain this honor!

Dr. Ayukotang has been an exemplary and successful leader from childhood, demonstrated in church, school and wherever he finds himself. He was the first foreign student to be a college President in Ghana, and it attracted the attention of many national media houses in that country. He is the Founding Father and Pioneer President of the Cameroonian Student Union in Kumasi (CAMSUK), a Union that brings Cameroonian students together and make them feel at home away from home. He rose to become the President of the National Union of Cameroonian students in Ghana (NUCSG).

Upon completing his OD training in Ghana, he went back home to Cameroon to provide quality Eye Health Services, to all in need in his country Cameroon. Upon arriving Cameroon, the Optometry professional Association was not registered and the profession itself was not recognised in the country. With passion and zeal for his profession, he spearheaded the registration of the Cameroon Association of Optometrists (CAO), (where he served as the Secretary General and now the President) in Cameroon, African Council of Optometry (AFCO) and at the World Council of Optometry (WCO).

He led two Advocacy Campaigns with empowerment from the WCO Advocacy Course. Firstly, to establish the Cameroon Council of Optometry (CCO), that regulates the Optometry profession in the country, by getting the profession recognised and classified as the sixth Health Care Professional body in the country. Secondly, to start a Doctor of Optometry (OD) programme at the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Buea, Cameroon, to be the first School to train ODs in the Country. These among others, earned him the title of the “Father of Optometry” in Cameroon.

Dr. Ayukotang was an active member and minute secretary of the AFCO Task Force appointed in October 2016, at Durban, South Africa, for the restructuring of AFCO. Currently, he is a Director of the AFCO Board, as the Secretary General and he Chairs the AFCO Public Health Committee. He is the AFCO Representative at the WCO Public Health Committee, and a Director at the WCO Board of Directors Representing Africa. He was declared by the Immediate Past President of WCO, as the Rising Star of the Optometry Profession globally from Cameroon during the WCO General Assembly, at the Joint 2019 Academy and 3rd World Congress of Optometry, in Orlando Florida, USA.

He is a member of the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC) Alumni Advisory Panel, a Mentor in the CSC Mentoring Programme, a Coordinator of the CSC Knowledge Hub-Global Health Coverage and member of the CSC UK Study Opportunity Programme. He is a Clinician, Researcher, Motivational Speaker and Advocate in Eye Health. He is also the Founder and CEO of Enowntai Nkongho Ayukotang Vision Institute (ENAVI).

Dr. Ayukotang is married to Mrs. Katty Mbikang Ayukotang and they are blessed with two kids, Ekongmaya and Enowntai. He enjoys among others, swimming and giving back selflessly to those in need.
